Full-timeReporting to the Dean of the School of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS), develop and direct activities that expand the visibility of Yale engineering and its base of support. A primary function is the timely generation of written content (SEAS website, “Yale Engineering” annual magazine, brochures, letters, speeches, and presentation materials) and cultivation of story leads. Proactively engage faculty members, students, and other stakeholders to prepare compelling news and public relations content. A second key function is participation in the stewardship of selected events and programs tied to the School’s stature and visibility including Distinguished Lectureships, the Advanced Graduate Leadership Program, alumni activities, outreach activities, and engineering accreditation. Work closely with SEAS senior leadership and the Director of Multimedia and Publications to accomplish all goals.
Essential Duties:
- Lead written content generation for all of the School’s communications efforts, including content for the School’s website, the “Yale Engineering” magazine, SEAS news section of the Yale Alumni Magazine, brochures, press releases, special events, letters, speeches, presentations, and materials associated with alumni relations and fund raising.
- With an understanding of Engineering & Applied Sciences, determine successful strategies for the School’s external relations efforts. Working closely with SEAS senior leadership and the Director of Publications and Multimedia decide on content and overall tone of communications and establish production schedules.
- Build strong relationships with internal Yale contacts including department chairs, faculty, students, collaborators and peers in the sciences. Promote, develop and maintain strong external contacts with alumni groups, community and academic organizations. Maintain up to date knowledge of the latest research initiatives and
- educational trends in Engineering, undergraduate educational opportunities and student activities. Provide benchmarking data to the Dean related to these trends. Act as a liaison with the Office of Public Affairs in providing content about Engineering.
- Consult on, develop and implement programming that promotes a positive public visibility and awareness of Engineering. Design, plan and publicize special events such as Dean’s Distinguished Lectures, donor site visits, student fairs, strategic symposia and student and alumni outreach programs.
- Provide leadership for and management of selected initiatives including the Advanced Graduate Leadership Program. Provide support as needed for other SEAS initiatives and programs.
- Work with the Dean and Development staff to manage the School’s Leadership Council. Design, plan and execute a wide variety of presentation materials to support this council. Serve, on behalf of the Dean, as the School’s liaison to individual members of the council.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in relevant technical field with substantive writing expertise or experiences.
Additional Education and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree and four years of experience in engineering or the physical sciences or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Preferred: Advanced degree in science/engineering or a dual degree of a BS in engineering or science and a second degree (Bachelors or Masters) in a writing intensive subject (e.g., science writing or journalism).

- Well developed presentation, project management and organizational skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to work with faculty, administrators and external constituencies.
- Self‐starter, strong work ethic and ability to work both collaboratively and independently in an organized and productive manner.
- Proficient computer skills with leading publishing software.
- Skilled in writing press releases and other communication materials.
