The Marketing Director is responsible for the overall administration, direction, and leadership of all marketing efforts for the Wisconsin Union, including development of a holistic organization marketing strategy and leadership of Union-wide brand development and management. The position includes supervision of the Union's Marketing Department, which is responsible for the marketing and promotion of the Union's seven (7) restaurants, twelve (12) markets, four (4) coffee houses, three (3) ice cream parlors, six (6) Hoofer Clubs, two (2) outdoor recreation facilities, and a sixty-six (66) room hotel operation, a large catering business, and the student-run Wisconsin Union Directorate Art, Film and Music committees. As part of its mission, the Union Marketing Department serves as a 'learning laboratory', where students gain hands-on experience in marketing, public relations, market research, advertising and graphic design.
MARKETING
1. Lead Wisconsin Union institutional marketing efforts with an emphasis on advancing organization-wide, holistic approaches to marketing Union programs and services. The hotel operation has an expected annual revenue of $1.5 million for FY 2012.
2. Direct and supervise the Marketing Department comprised of Marketing, Communications, and Graphic Design operations.
3. Direct the conceptualization and development of innovative marketing plans for individual Wisconsin Union programs and services and advise Union managers and student programmers in the use of effective marketing and promotional strategies.
4. Develop and lead the Union's marketing communications strategies utilizing both traditional and online media.
5. Develop and promote an organization-wide brand development strategy that successfully advances the Wisconsin Union 'brand' while simultaneously maintaining various successful 'sub-brands'.
6. Direct the Union's use of social media and internet marketing and communication tools, including oversight of the Union's website and social media accounts (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
7. Conduct and supervise market research projects to evaluate the many and complex Union programs, services, and marketing approaches.
8. Remain abreast of marketing industry best practices as well as current trends among today's college students; Advise Union management of these trends and recommend strategies to ensure the Union consistently offers relevant programs, products and services while utilizing the most effective communication avenues to reach its audiences.
9. Maintain a knowledge and understanding of the Union's customer base and develop strategies to maintain and broaden the various market segments that are served by the Union, including UW faculty and staff, Union members, UW alumni, University guests, and the Madison community.
10. Provide oversight and budget guidance and control of approximately $750,000 Marketing and Advertising activity at the Wisconsin Union. Also evaluate marketing and advertising campaigns, strategies, and activities of all operations for ongoing effectiveness.
11. Function as a marketing account rep for specific clients including, but not limited to, Theater, Membership and Mini Courses, plus external clients such as the Center for the Humanities, School of Music, Language Institute, the Center for Jewish Studies, and other UW departments.
12. Develop and maintain ongoing communication with UW Communications to coordinate Union marketing efforts with overall UW marketing strategy.
13. Contribute to the Union's effort to achieve a more culturally diverse and welcoming environment through bias-free and inclusive communications, effective hiring, customer service, and management practices.
GRAPHICS & PRINT PRODUCTION
1. Direct the graphics staff in the development, production, and delivery of graphic design and website management.
2. Establish and maintain departmental standards for quality, creativity and accuracy in work.
3. Oversee purchase and maintenance of Graphic Department hardware and other equipment.
4. Oversee purchase of outside printing services for Union units and establish and maintain departmental standards for quality and timely delivery of printed materials representing revenue of $103,000 annually.
5. Educate students in graphic design as related to the Union's programs as well as assist students in their classroom work.
INSTRUCTION
1. Educate students and staff in marketing, advertising, communications, graphic design, market research, web design, and social media marketing as related to the Union's programs as well as students' classroom work and degrees.
2. Oversee the Marketing Department student internship program of 7 to 10 interns annually.
3. Consult with UW faculty to encourage student-led market research and other class projects that focus on the development and implementation of marketing strategies for Union programs and services.
4. Supervise approximately 7 to 10 student intern academic marketing projects a semester.
SUPERVISION OF STAFF & FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
1. Hire, train, supervise, and conduct performance reviews for six professional staff and 7 to 10 student interns, including a communications director, two marketing specialists, a program assistant, a graphic designer/web manager and a designer/graphics production manager. Monitor ongoing staff professional development.
2. Develop and implement annual departmental goals.
3. Prepare and administer annual operational budgets for the Marketing and Graphics totaling approximately $520,000.
4. Oversee Graphics' external client billing in excess of $15,000 annually.
