Resource Development - Spring Intern

Overview
United Way of Dane County is creating measurable results for health and human service issues in Dane County.  We are ending family homelessness, ensuring academic achievement among youth, helping seniors remain independent in homes of their choosing, and so much more. We seek a motivated, detail-oriented, self-starter with an interest in non-profit fundraising who can fill an integral role in our Resource Development department.  This is an unpaid position. We are located at 2059 Atwood Avenue on the near east side of Madison on the bus line.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct research on current and potential donors by reviewing local and national news and business publications.
  • Contact local businesses to get a sense of their charitable plans.
  • Provide support for volunteer training sessions and campaign events as needed, including materials assembly.
  • Update donor information in the organizational database.
  • Develop content for electronic, departmental and donor communications.
  • Maintain online presence for Rosenberry Society, United Way’s young leader group, using Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.
  • Assist in the production of large-scale mailing projects.
  • Safeguard the confidentiality of donor information at all times.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.
Commitment
This spring internship (approx. mid January – May) has a time commitment of approximately 20 hours per week during regular business hours.  A specific schedule will be confirmed upon selection.

Qualifications
  • Interest in fundraising and the non-profit sector.
  • Extensive computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft office software, searching on-line databases and the Internet.  Must have experience with spreadsheets and databases.
  • Detail-oriented and organized with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A commitment to professional ethics and ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Demonstrated ability to work individually and in a team environment and meet goals in a timely manner.
  • Punctuality and dependability.
  • Experience in sales, marketing or a fundraising environment is helpful.

Duties of the position would include:
  • Researching prospective events

  • Organizing and tracking event attendees and solicitations
  • Working with staff on invitation mailing
  • Helping track RSVP’s
  • Being on site for all events and assisting with post-event follow-up
  • Providing support to the individual giving program as needed
Job qualifications:
Qualified candidates will have at least sophomore standing and be enrolled in a college or university pursuing a degree in library science, liberal arts, business, nonprofit management or related field. Applicants should possess strong organization skills, demonstrated proficiency managing detail oriented tasks, and the ability to communicate effectively. The Reporters Committee has existed since 1970 to preserve and defend the First Amendment and freedom of information rights and interests of journalists around the country. As a small organization, the Reporters Committee relies heavily on its interns to provide significant contributions to our publications and our legal work. Interns report and write on free press and media law issues for our magazine, Web site and guidebooks and assist our staff of lawyers in conducting research to help reporters overcome legal hurdles covering the news.
The Reporters Committee also provides its interns with regular opportunities to interact with working journalists, media lawyers and policymakers through seminars around Washington, D.C. Interns will attend Congressional hearings on Capitol Hill, hear arguments in the U.S. Supreme Court and other federal appellate courts and visit newsrooms and government agencies where they can learn firsthand about free-press issues.
We also hope that after their experience at the Reporters Committee, our interns become First Amendment and freedom of information advocates.
Students or recent graduates may intern in the Spring, Summer or Fall semesters. Interns may receive college credit and are eligible to receive a $2,000 stipend from the Reporters Committee. Some interns may be enrolled in Washington semester study programs through their colleges or universities.

Two types of internship are available:
Journalism internship. This intern, a college student or recent graduate, will cover a broad range of issues, primarily writing for our magazine, Web site and guidebooks.
Legal interns. Legal interns are law students who will gain experience in legal research and writing, aiding the attorneys at the Reporters Committee answering calls from our legal hotline and will also contribute to the magazine, Web site and guidebooks. Journalism experience is not always necessary, but still preferred, in legal intern candidates.
