The University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Journalism & Mass Communication invites nominations and applications for the 2012 Sharon Stark Investigative Internship. This program will place one undergraduate or graduate student in a full-time, paid, 10-week summer internship with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Watchdog Team, winner of three Pulitzer Prizes in the past four years.

As part of this noted investigative journalism team, the intern will report and write stories for the group’s “Public Investigator” series. The intern also will be part of a standing weekly rotation covering crime and general assignment and contribute to other investigative work the team pursues.

The stipend of $4,000 is generously underwritten by SJMC alumna Sharon Stark, a strong supporter of investigative journalism as one of the most important and essential roles in the profession.

Successful applicants will be:
·      undergraduate or master’s students in the School of Journalism & Mass Communication graduating by December 2012.
·      interested in investigative journalism
·      familiar with the work of the Journal Sentinel Watchdog Group
·      hard-working and open to all kinds of reporting and writing assignments
·      outstanding in gathering, judging and relaying information
·      seeking a career in reporting for a news organization

Application package must include:
·      cover letter
·      resume
·      three (and only three) of your best news clips
·      one paragraph detailing an issue or idea you believe would be worth a Watchdog investigation
·      300- to 500-word essay on the role of investigative journalism in society or the impact of a particular piece of investigative work
  
Deadline
·      All applications must be submitted in hard copy to Deborah Blum’s mailbox in 5115 Vilas Hall (only students currently studying abroad may submit applications via e-mail to dblum@wisc.edu)
·      All applications must be received no later than noon, Friday, February 24.
·      An initial screening committee will review applications before finalists are invited to Milwaukee for interviews with the Watchdog Group
