Internships Available with Assembly Democrats 

Several Democratic Assembly member offices are currently looking for students interested in 

interning in the State Capitol this semester. These internships are unpaid but will provide 

valuable political and communication experience and helpful insight into state government. You will also have the opportunity to meet Assembly leadership, and these internships are a great chance to network.  

Tasks associated with a Democratic Assembly internship are listed below. 

Constituent Services: Draft letters responding to constituents’ policy concerns, work with 

different state agencies to help constituents with any state-related problems. 

Press: Track local media sources for references to state and local politics of interest, prepare press releases, editorials, and help write the legislative e-newsletter. 

Data Entry: Work with our computer database to enter incoming constituent contacts and track constituent opinions. 

Legislative Research: Research current and future bills. 

We are looking for candidates who can dedicate at least 8 hours per week to the internship, so we can assign meaningful and worthwhile projects. For most offices, internships will begin the second week of January and would expect you to stay on for the duration of the semester. If you will be in Madison over winter break and would like to start earlier, please note that on your application.

The James L. Hoyt 2013-14

Badger Sports Properties Internship

The Position

This is a challenging and expanded opportunity for students interested in broadcast sports.  The James L. Hoyt Intern will work with Badger Sports Properties (Learfield Sports), the broadcast partner of University of Wisconsin Athletics.  The intern will work closely with the producer of the Badger Sports Report television program on many components of the show including: generating compelling story ideas, videotaping games and practices, and interviewing players and coaches to produce content for the weekly television program.  This position will challenge the intern to become an integral part of the production team.  The intern will have significant responsibilities in virtually every component of the production process.  The position is for the 2013-14 academic year and will involve 10-12 hours of work each week.

Qualifications

The James L. Hoyt Internship is open to any full-time UW-Madison student who will have at least junior standing in 2013-14.  Applicants should have experience in some phase of broadcast and/or sports reporting and promotion, and should have career aspirations in some area of broadcast sports.  A previous internship in television or experience working for student media – either campus newspaper or student radio – will be a definite advantage to applicants.  Experience with video cameras and non-linear editing, especially Final Cut Pro, is also beneficial.

Hoyt at jlhoyt@wisc.edu.  Deadline for applications is Tuesday, May 14, 2013.  The selection will be announced no later than May 31.  Selection will be made by a committee representing Badger Sports Properties, UW Intercollegiate Athletics, and the UW-Madison.

The Internship

The James L. Hoyt Internship has evolved from an agreement between Prof. Hoyt and Clyde Lear, the then-owner of Learfield Sports, when Learfield first acquired the broadcast rights to UW-Madison athletics in 1994.  The position has been filled by UW-Madison students since that time.  Upon successful completion of the internship, the intern is paid a stipend by Badger Sports Properties.  For more information on Badger Sports Properties, visit learfieldsports.com.
